Banbury Road, Oxford: number changes at the older (south) end

Change in street name and renumbering

The south part of the Banbury Road was originally called St Giles' Road East as far north as Bevington Road. The new mansions on the Banbury Road to the north were only known by their house names and were sometimes described as being in St Giles' Field. The change to the present name and numbering system took place in about 1882, and Jackson’s Oxford Journal on 19 April 1887 mentioned this renumbering in relation to a notice being served on Mrs Filsell of the Park Nursery requiring her to affix the number “50” to her house at the Park Nursery, but that a subsequent amendment was agreed that “Mrs. Filsell’s number should be 48, and that the garden be not numbered”.

1876 Street Plan

The 1876 street plan of Oxford shows in detail all the houses built on the Banbury Road by that date as far north as the city boundary near St Margaret's Road and Park Town, and many of the terrace and house names are included.

  • St Giles' Road East

  • St Giles' Road East/Banbury Road as far as the city boundary as it stood in 1876

Parishes
  • St Giles' parish originally covered the whole of the Banbury Road up as far as Summertown
  • Ss Philip & James Church was built in the Woodstock Road in 1862 and then covered the Banbury Road houses situated to the north of North Parade Avenue
  • St Margaret's Church in St Margaret's Road was built as a chapel of ease for Ss Philip & James Church in 1885 and had its own parish from 1896.

The parish cemetery for this area is St Sepulchre's in Walton Street, and many of its residents were buried there from 1848.
